The Jujitsu Uniform

the Jujitsu kimono

The uniform worn whilst training in Jujitsu is a standard martial arts Kimono, sometimes called a Gi.

The picture to the left shows a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi, a stronger fabric and double stitching is used for this gi compared to a traditional Jujitsu kimono due to the constant grips and sharp pulls and grabs during a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu match.

The trousers are loose fitting around the legs to ensure you're not restricted in any way.

The jacket should be worn with the right hand side lapel under the left as shown. Jackets may sometimes have short tassels inside that can be tied to the opposite side of the gi to ensure it doesn't become loose; this isn't found on many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi's since many participants want the gi to become loose, sometimes to use it against their opponent.

The belt is worn over the jacket. To see how to tie the belt see below.

Tying The Belt

01.

step 1

The Kimono belt is called an Obi (yes, now know where Obi-One Kinobi got his name! :o)

To tie the belt, you first need to wrap your kimono jacket so the right-hand side lapel is tucked under the left-hand side.

You may wish to pin your jacket with your elbow(s) as you're tying the belt.

Now hold the belt near the middle out in front of you as shown.

02.

step 2

Place the belt across your stomach.

The middle of the belt should be in the middle of your stomach. As you can see, the ends of the belt are both just touching the floor.

03.

step 3

Wrap the belt around you to the back and swap each end with opposite hands as shown.

04.

step 4

Bring the ends of the belt back in front of you.

05.

step 5

Now cross the ends of the belt in front of you as shown.

The left-hand side goes over the right-hand side.

06.

step 6

Whilst still holding on to the end of the belt with your left hand, tuck your left thumb behind the part of the belt that is wrapped around you.

Now hold the belt that's in your right hand with your left hand.

07.

step 7

The part of the belt on the right-hand-side is now to be pulled up between your jacket and the rest of the belt. Your left thumb will help you to create a little space for this.

08.

step 8

Now use your right thumb to hook under the belt as shown to pull it all the way through.

09.

step 9

You can now take your left thumb out from between your jacket and the belt and hold the belt as shown.

10.

step 10

Now, with the two end of the belt in either hand, place the right-hand side on top of the left, and pinch with your left-hand thumb and fingers as shown.

11.

step 11

The part of the belt that is now in your right hand goes back towards you and down through the space created.

Now use your right hand to pull this end of the belt fully through the gap.

12.

step 12

Take hold of both ends of the belt and shown and pull tight.

13.

step 13

And there you have it, one nicely tied belt.
